What a beautiful day it was here in Boston; over 60 degrees all day, sunny and clear. 2004 was a great year for me. My new business, Coherence Group, did very well and I have enough business to keep me going in 2005. Not bad, for a single person consulting firm! In the new year, I will be blogging and writing a new book on globalization in the knowledge economy. I will keep everyone up to date on my progress. I also look forward to getting back to my Wine Wiki, a project that I have let atrophy for a while. December was a hugely busy month for me, with two trips back and forth to London and Cambridge England.
For the past week I have neglected my blog, which is not my habit. There are times, however, when work intrudes on the activities we like to do. I am very lucky, I have my own business, called Coherence Group and I am doing very well right now! the economy has come back and I am busy with two KM implementations and leadership and management training. The work is great!
I have discovered a new blog with insight on creating a company that I found helpful. Loïc Le Meur writes about entrepreneurship, social networking and technology in his Weblog. Since I am creating Coherence Group and have been working extremely hard to get my business off the ground, Loic's assertion that execution is critical is relevant. Starting a small company, especially in this economic environment, is risky, but the potential is huge.
It is almost done! I have been working on it for almost a year, it seems. Distracted by actual consulting work, I never seem to have been able to complete the site. Because most people have been on vaction during the Christmas holidays, I've spent some time updating, editing and repairing the links on the site. Some, still don't work, but I am getting there. My colleague, Doug Bolin, and I are getting together soon to finish things up. Doug is a superb information architect and web designer, so I really value his help.
Coherence Group focuses on solving information, learning, knowledge and content management problems for companies and non-profits. We have experience solving problems with most technologies, but as I wrote and thought about the work I do, most of the value comes from understanding a customer's business problem explicitly, understanding user requirements and creating a process, content, and technology solution that meets those needs. My experience suggests that most companies jump directly to a technology solution before understanding the problem or how to solve it. I hope Coherence Group can create a platform for better decision making in this discipline.
